A professional participant banned for utilizing modified pokémon claims the entire aggressive scene is riddled with cheaters.

The Pokémon franchise has come a long way since its innocent 8-bit origins in 1996, but as soon as the original Game Boy games became a surprise hit fans started to take it all very seriously.

Nowadays you can win thousands in prize money, at huge global tournaments, and, unlike Ash and co., some players are willing to cheat their way to the top.

According to pro Pokémon player Brady Smith, the competitive scene is dominated by cheats: ’80 to 90% of top-level players modify or hack their pokémon. It’s a trade secret, but everyone ‘in the know’ knows this.’

Smith, along with many others, was banned from this year’s World Championship for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, for using modified pokémon on his roster, but he claims that’s just routine.

During an interview with Gameland, he said that he used someone else’s pokémon which created a trail in the hidden data in Pokémon HOME, a service that lets you store and transfer pokémon between games.

‘The HOME trackers were off. I had legitimate pokémon, I modified them. But I got greedy with a Grimmsnarl. Instead of modifying my existing one, my friend said he had a legitimate one from HOME, so I opted to use that one,’ Smith said.

‘That messed me up because of the HOME tracker being wiped.’

Why cheat within the first place, you may ask? Particularly in a recreation like Pokémon with such harmless intentions. In keeping with Smith, it appears it’s as a result of they don’t wish to put within the effort to degree up a full squad of pokémon.

‘It’s [levelling up a competitive roster] such a barrier of entry. We like battling in opposition to different folks, we don’t care about getting our pokémon within the recreation. We simply wish to play the aggressive recreation.

‘This entry barrier stops new gamers from moving into the sport and it hurts vets as a result of it’s such a unnecessary barrier and time sink.’

Considering again to when he bought banned from the World Championship, he a minimum of appears to take some duty.

‘I used to be heartbroken. However to be sincere, you reap what you sow. It was my fault, we had been warned forward of time. I simply want I used to be extra cautious. I used to be conscious of that, and due to that, I couldn’t throw myself a pity social gathering.’

Whether or not the bans shall be sufficient to scrub up the scene stays to be seen however modifying pokémon utilizing instruments from outdoors of the sport has been occurring for many years at this level and it’s most likely going to be not possible to take away it totally.
