Suicide Squad remains to be a dwell service recreation and Surprise Girl is just too Categorical Instances

Warner Bros. is making good on its risk to concentrate on dwell service video games, with two new DC Comics adaptations both embracing the concept.

Some video game rumours are harder to believe than others, no matter how good the source is, but we doubt anyone had trouble believing that Warner Bros. is looking to go all-in on live service games. Especially given the reputation of cutthroat CEO David Zaslav.

The initial rumour didn’t specify any particular games, although obviously Mortal Kombat and DC Comics titles are likely to be amongst the first properties to be involved. Technically, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League already was, but it was originally designed around the earlier concept of loot boxes and while that has since been removed live service elements are still part of the game.

The new 20 minute gameplay video below doesn’t mention any of that but by opening pre-orders, and describing the contents of the Deluxe Edition, it’s revealed it includes ‘one premium battle pass token.’

Even the standard edition talks about free seasonal battle pass tiers, post-launch seasonal updates, free missions and items, and ‘earnable’ characters. In other words, a full-blown live service game.

The only thing that’s not clear is whether the game has microtransactions or not, but the Deluxe Edition does talk about different outfits, weapon skins, and ‘weapon dolls’, so it’s really just a question of whether they can be bought separately or only through a battle pass.

Suicide Squad’s last preview, back in February, went so badly the game was delayed until February 2, but the problem wasn’t just distaste at the live service angle but the fact that nothing about the game looked all that appealing, with generic open world gameplay that doesn’t appear to play to the strengths of any of the characters.

Perhaps developers Rocksteady, who made the Batman: Arkham games, just aren’t doing a good job of showing the game off to its full potential, but this latest video doesn’t do much to turn the tide.

In related news, it seems the Wonder Woman game announced back in 2021, but never shown beyond a logo and a character render, is also a live service game.

Nothing beyond a bit of leaked artwork has been seen since the reveal but a new job ad for a Lead Software Engineer, Gameplay (a senior role that you would’ve thought they’d have filled by now) lists ‘experience helping maintain a live software product or game’ as one of the qualities it’s looking for.

The game was originally described as a single-player open world game, which suggests something in the vein of God Of War – which seems a good fit for the character.

It doesn’t, however, seem like the sort of thing that would easily support live service elements, so either it’s been completely reworked since the initial announcement or perhaps it has some kind of ancillary multiplayer mode.

The leak did feature two additional characters, neither of which were clearly identifiable, so they could be generic, player-created avatars used in multiplayer or co-op.
