A brand new and improved Xbox controller is deliberate for subsequent 12 months, with new haptic and movement management options.
A conveyor belt of revelations about a new Xbox mid-generation refresh has leaked and, surprisingly, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the culprit.
One of the documents from the Microsoft-FTC legal battle, which were not supposed to be made public, is named ‘Road to 2030’ and has revealed a new Xbox controller, codenamed Sebile.
The document includes an image of the controller which highlights a host of new features and improvements, that bring it more in line with the PlayStation 5 DualSense.
The new controller will have quieter buttons and thumbsticks. The joypad will also have an accelerometer, which includes a ‘lift to wake’ function, and it will have a rechargeable battery that you can swap out.
On top of that, the controller will be geared with Voice Coil Actuators, which will function as a speaker and improve haptic feedback.
The controller is wireless and can be connected to Bluetooth 5.2 and the Cloud, and is made with less of the plastic-like material resin. It’ll also be more durable. How well it holds after a thrust against the wall is uncertain.
The new controller still looks very similar to the classic Merlin Xbox joypad, but it’s not clear how accurate the image is or whether it’s just a placeholder.
There are already plans to let you customise it through the Xbox Design Lab feature, presumably allowing you to change both the top and bottom colours.
The controller could accompany the upcoming Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X version, also revealed in the leak, as soon as next year.
The new-look Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X are pencilled in for releases September 2024 and November 2024 respectively.
The controller will no doubt be released separately too, with other leaked documents suggesting it, or a future variant, will become key to Xboxt’s next gen plans.
